My Teacher

a poem by Nkwelle Assurance Nkwelle, Cameroon

Sometimes the squirrel, sometimes the parrot
Sometimes the songbird, yet sometimes the fed tiger.
Enraged to calm. calmed to teach,
My teacher, a splendour unmatched.

The beam of light like April's sunny morning,
Where darkness reigns no teacher resides there.
The splendour of illumination, the torch at the crossroads,
The repository of honour, prismatic resplendence, a teacher is.

Faith rules the universe
My teacher rules the mind.

The mind the world moves,
My teacher moves the world.

Almost a blank sheet of paper I came,
He shaped, she shaped and now I hold a pen.

My teacher? The gem of the world.
