Beautiful Accent

a poem by Lady Shaula Salathe, Australia - poetry writer, author, poet

He had a beautiful accent
I fall for it every time
With his dark foreign ways
When we made love it was
Simply divine

He had a beautiful accent
I’m a sucker for love from afar
I believed him when he said
I love you like moon and like star

His manners were perfect
And he adored culture and art
I mistook culture and manners
For strength of the heart
And I thought I could leave all my family
And make a new home
I find myself homeless
So I sit here all alone

And I failed to see
The heart is the same
Wherever you go
And I failed to see
That I said yes
When I should have said no

He had a beautiful accent
I won’t tell you where he was from
Now I’ll know a good heart when I see one
From now on

He had a beautiful accent
I’d listen to him by the hour
And I couldn’t see darkness upon it
And my light he’d devour
And his beautiful words disguised thoughts that
I never have seen
And I struggled with love that I’m not sure
Should ever have been

But I failed to see
The heart is the same
Wherever you go
And I failed to see
That I said yes
When I should have said no

He had a beautiful accent
I won’t tell you where he was from
Now I’ll know a good heart when I see one
From now on

Written for a dear friend who was not so lucky in love at the time...
