INNOCENCE

a poem by P.K.N. Panicker, India

My grand- daughter
and her friend Sarah
the girl from the next house
both not yet in their teens
puppy flesh on the cheeks
not yet completely waned,
chests a little bulged,
yet to round off
pubescence around the corner,
each one
with a towel in hand
after a shower
straight from the bath
crackling laughter
and ringing words,
Apoopa*
help us dry the hair
and wipe the water
off our bodies,
two small smiling statues
stood erect,
the expression
on their faces
written large and clear.

* Apoopa – grandfather.
