THEN AND NOW

a poem by P.K.N. Panicker, India

Those were days
when we sailed
in paper boats
and flew paper planes,
laughed loud
each time
our planes made 9/11
on the shoulders
of our teachers,
and knew not
what fear was.

Today, we talk
of vanishing tigers,
poachers and terrorists,
feel insecure,
fear and shudder,
when confronted
with paper tigers,
and even paper planes.
