a poem by P.K.N. Panicker, India

Mew, mew,
the kitten said,
that was the finest music
they ever heard!

Craw, craw,
the crow-lings mused,
that was the sweetest song
they ever enjoyed!

One chick in the small crowd
subscribed a dissenting note,
“Mummy’s voice is sweet indeed
but I hear a voice sweeter.”

In the distance
a cuckoo sang a song
in her wild abandonment
a melody, captivating.
