KMS007. FIRST GRAND PILGRIMAGE

a poem by Rajaram Ramachandran, India - poetry writer, author, poet

KANCHI MAHA SWAMI

After giving up their family ties,
Those who have taken sanyas,
Should go round religious places,
And take bath in the sacred waters.

They should visit the local temples,
Teach the assembled devotees morals,
And code of conduct to be observed,
In the spiritual path to be followed.

In the year 1919, Maha Swami began
His first pilgrimage tour, a grand one,
With 200 Mutt’s staff and Vedic Pundits,
Followed by cows, horses, and elephants.

A Village, near Kumbakonam Town,
By name Veppathur, the first one
Of his choice in that pilgrimage tour,
Welcomed them all to stay there.

There he performed Vyasa Puja,
And fifteen days of Dasara Puja,
For the welfare of all people,
Who enjoyed these events well.

Next, in the year 1920, he stayed
At Sirugalathur Village and moved
To Thiruvarur Town to worship
Deity Thiagaraja Swamy in that trip.

Thiagaraja Swamy, and his consort,
Kamalambike Ambal, their very sight
Gave them all, in his second visit
To this ancient temple, more delight.

Like this, he visited Vedharanyam
Mayiladudurai, Nagapattinam,
And all other places, one by one,
Numerous ones here to mention.

This young Sanyasi attracted,
More and more big crowds,
And wherever he went on his tour,
To see him, they were so eager.

Their day to day problems
And their major grievances,
He understood the same well,
And tried to help those people.
