a poem by Phillip Joseph Hussey, UK - poetry writer, author, poet

When the shadows of the trees lie low
And summer wind is stilled and silent
When the cry is no longer heard
And the bleating of the lamb ceases
When the eagle has flown away
And the nest is empty and forlorn
When the cries of the innocent fall
And the wretched grin and laugh
When the leaves have long fallen
And lie crumbled in the dust
When all memories are lost
And the fallen lie forgotten
When the sun is slowly sinking
And the night is in twilight
When the mist is abounding
And gloom is in the air
When the mind is decayed
And it’s thought is stilled
When all is forgotten
And no one remembers
When the life is spent
And its voice no longer heard
At the very least
Please remember me
