Remembering When...

a poem by Fazia Ali, Trinidad

Remembering when you would sit us on the kitchen bench
And regale us with ancient tales of Greece
With you we'll visit the lands afar
Of Hercules, Cyclops and Jason with his fleece

While awaiting dinner we clung to your every word
Like Odysseus to the belly of the sheep
And we would sail the seas with Amphitrite
As you kept us both from falling asleep

Cherished memories of a great father
Who like Hercules trials endured
But like Perseus slayed his gorgons
Despite being trampled and gored

You left us so suddenly
With no chance for us to say goodbye
But you have now become our eudaemon
And our memories of you will never die.
