I hate fighting with you

a poem by Simone Jenneane Oerson, South Africa

To my husband Enrico

Back and forth we go
Blows going lower than low
Tearing each other apart
We stop to begin and all over we start
My soul screams to stop
My heart aches till it drops
I hate fighting with you

Kicking down walls
Like drunkards in a brawl
Like Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee
Tongue lashes so vile and deadly
Not caring how dirty we get
Throwing down with no bets
I hate fighting with you

Hate myself a little more with every word
Every sentence poisonous, cutting like a flaming sword
I see the pain inflicted… my legs go lame
My heart is crushed inside I and I feel ashamed
Yet we keep tearing at each other
Not caring until we’re both smothered
I hate fighting with you

How do we stop when we want to see the blood?
When we start the words and knives come in a flood
All we want is to give the pain we feel
Doubting each other’s love and wondering if it’s even real
Knowing this makes no sense
We still carry on without border or fence
I really can’t stop it even if I hate fighting with you
