a poem by Phillip Joseph Hussey, UK

Is there any glory
in fighting and war
Which brings out
the ruthless spirit in man
Does the suffering
it vainly breeds
Enhance the image
of our mankind
Does it not show
the darkness of man's being
Can a thousand memories
and countless tears
Wash away the shame
and horror of war
Is there no other answer
to man's disputes
Why don't we choose
love of God as an answer
Rather than hate,
destruction and murder
And who are the trophies
such conflicts gain
Except stones on graves
to mark our disgrace
