a poem by Edwin Keith Jepson, UK - poetry writer, author, poet

In days of old down deep coal-mines
hard working men did meet their fate ,
Loss of life and injured spines
they joined ranks of many a mate ,
Lucky in one way though not another
many lived out their lives in gratitude ,
Remembering days when lungs did suffer
those who survived ,lived in solitude ,
In different countries disasters occur
and hundreds of miners lost their lives
It always happens and doesn't seem fair
Leaving behind mournful wives ,
Coal is now a thing of the past
But in days of old ,
The mines were vast .
