a poem by Melyssa G. Sprott, USA - poetry writer, author, poet

The air is damp.
The room is cold.
The silence is deafening.
Fear tightens its hold.

Alone in the dark.
Alone, perhaps not—
(Is that the sound of breathing?)
Fear definitely has you caught.

It’s impossible to see.
The room is pitch black.
Is someone there,
waiting to attack?

Someone is here,
(Still not believing,
but their breath is warm)
you can feel them breathing.

Body shivers
from chill and from fright.
Laughter is heard
as you beg for your life.
