Vicious Cycle

a poem by Melyssa G. Sprott, USA - poetry writer, author, poet

I am the fallen protector—
a withered guardian.
I have failed,
it begins again.

We can’t go back
to simpler times
of coloring books
and nursery rhymes.

I can’t make
the past undone.
I’m helpless to this,
that our parents begun.

You follow in their footsteps
down a dead end street.
I can’t turn it all around,
so, a failure I continue to be.

I’ve tried to help you
change your errant ways—
all to no avail,
in this cycle you choose to remain.
