My Best Friend

a poem by Melyssa G. Sprott, USA - poetry writer, author, poet

I once had a faithful companion
with me for many years.
More than a dog, she saw me through laughter,
anger and even tears.

Towards the end,
as selfish as it seems,
I was keeping her alive
for me.

Moon Beam was suffering,
that I could see,
but still I needed
her with me.

The decision to end her pain
was harder than I could know,
but I realized it was time
for my Moon Beam to go.

As she went to heaven
late that February night,
I whispered, “Goodnight, sweet Beamer,
may angels greet thee on thy last flight.”
