LONELY OLD AGE

a poem by Carmen R. Stefanescu, Romania

VACANT MOODS ON EMPTY AFTERNOONS,
BROKEN CLOCKS WITH NO MORE TIME TO TELL.
HOSTS OF GHOSTS THAT HAUNT THE HOLLOW ROOMS,
RUST AND DUST HAVE CLOGGED THE OLD DOORBELL.

NOT A CHIME TO MELT THE ICY SILENCE,
NOR A PEAL OF LAUGHTER TO UPSET THE MOTHS,
JUST A SIGH THAT SHAKES THE ANCIENT BODY
AND VOID GLANCES ROUND THE BARE WALLS.

WEARINESS REPLACED THE SPARKLING WIT.
ALL THAT GLITTERED ONCE HAS PROVED ILLUSION.
FLESH AND SPIRIT ARE SUBDUED BY TIME,
SUCKED INTO A WHIRLPOOL OF CONFUSION!
