Goodbye Summer

a poem by Lila Joseph, USA - poetry writer, author, poet

Today the green is seeping out
of the leaves
The trees shake their heads and shed
the early browns and reds
I wonder about the swallows
usually they are in the air now
swooping and slicing the watery blue
I miss them here above me
Yesterday they surprised me
by following the car
on my first summer trip
I know that it’s late this year
but it seems to me
that autumn is early, in such a hurry
to welcome the cold
The mist is thick and clammy
before the sun awakes
I wonder -
Does this have anything to do
with the climbing of the years?
