Child for Sale

a poem by Lila Joseph, USA - poetry writer, author, poet

The night is long and warm
she turns on her side for a little ease
the bought child is ready to be born
the hunger tortures her like fleas

Tomorrow it would be better
cause the cold cash would ease the pain
maybe soften of the parting of the ways
while a child is degraded to commodity
to be bought and sold indiscriminately
while mother with the pittance
gleaned from the handlers fee
soothes the way to yet another pregnancy

Child for sale, place your bid
choose from the modern day slaves at will
blond with blue eyes, dark-haired of brown
every sort possible by the human pound
only requirement for production job
soul destroying poverty and a mother young

When the child bearing days of mother are done
give her into the soft arms of cold hard ground
