Two Poems from our Fall Poetry Collection

Father

Author: Paige Oxenford

Poem:
Father

As I sit here all alone on my couch
I contemplate how you must've felt
Being drunk or passed out every night
Even on the nights I was with you
You just couldn't stop
You practically drank in your sleep
If you woke up in the morning you started Drinking right away
I don't know what you look like without a beer Can in your hand and a cigarette in your mouth
Your fake hair and your real pain
It must be too hard to live how you lived
The drinking was an escape wasn't it?
Well, now you have to start over
You're gonna be lonely
How do you think I felt?!
All those nights sitting in your apartment next To a passed out person who calls himself my father
I'm starting to wonder if I need a father
It makes you wonder
Doesn't It?

Never, Not Once

Author: Cassey Kinnamon

Poem: Never, Not Once

I never saw you, when I was 2,

I never saw you,
on my first day of school,

My 8th birthday,
I wished for you,
when I blew my candles out,

By 10 I hated you,

Now 15, my first day of high school...
I hated that year,
but you weren’t there to know,

Finally my last year of high school
and still not one birthday card
or Christmas card,

Do you even care?

But now,
I can say look at me,
look what you missed out in.

I’m 18, I don’t do drugs, or drink,
I don’t even smoke...

And I did it without you,
without a dad,

You were never there for me,
but my mom is,
she did your job and hers

I fly with all my colors showing
and all thanks to my mom,

You were never there for me,
But I guess I never really needed you...
