Two Poems from our Family Poetry Collection

Families

Author: Deanna Dilley

Poem:
Families

Families aren't always made up of Moms and Dads.
They're not just brothers and sisters.
Families come from communities
of friends and neighbors.
They make up the world.
They are the children who make a difference.
Families come from all over the land.
They come in all different
shapes and sizes and colors.
Families are the groups of children
who roll around in wheelchairs.
They hobble from place to place
on crutches or with canes.
Families are the deaf and blind
who unite with each other.
They teach the world that we are one.
Families aren't just made of
Grandmas and Grandpas.
They're not entirely made up from
Aunts, uncles, or cousins.
Families are communities
of children across the world;
Who were born with disabilities,
Yet are no different than you or me.

Letter to my Grandma

Author: Marinela Reka

Poem: Letter to my Grandma

I got a blank paper
And started to write
Out of the blue came a tear
And I felt something inside

I demanded the tear to go away
“Because I have a problem and I don't want you”
But the tear said no
“Because I have a problem too”

I wanted to write down
“That I miss my Nana you see”
And the tear replayed
“That's the same problem with me”

The tear and me
Didn't get along at all
I wrote the letter and it would make it wet
Every time it would fall

“Oh you naughty tear,
Why did you come out, did I say you can?'
The tear says, “I am sad,
Because I really miss my Nan”

So me and the tear together
Did not write much just a sentence or two
“Grandma! Please come and visit me
Because I am really missing you.”
