Two Poems from our Funerals Poetry Collection

OBITUARIES

Author: Jacinta Ramayah

Poem:
OBITUARIES

Love to read obituaries in the daily
but have to do them secretly,
Once was caught by daughter
who looked at me in horror.

“How morbid can you get,” she retorted.
“Just wanted to read about the departed.
With the living, to share my sympathy
when loved ones leave unexpectedly.”

“I know I won’t be around one day,
wonder what all of you will say.”
Son with a smirk, had a fast reply,
“ It’s a surprise for you. Please don’t pry.”

Their father who usually keeps silent,
bit out a caustic statement,
“How do you expect the crowd to be present,
When at their weddings, you are always absent.”

THE ABSTRUSE JUSTICE

Author: Megha Chaturvedi

Poem: THE ABSTRUSE JUSTICE

The abstruse justice

A girl jilted by destiny, orphaned at nine
Too innocent to understand life, to fear death
Busy catching butterflies, making castles of the sand
The handkerchief her mother had pinned, still intact
With a Barbie doll in hand
Expected to cry, forced to react
She is dragged to her parents’ funeral.
The protective shell had cracked
Rays of darkness entered
Darkness-not an acceptable state but absolute absence
Ready to engulf that souls innocence.
The symphony of silence transforming
into the church ceremony’s wistful laments.
Oblivious of death-the ultimate justice of god,
She is still unaware of the brevity of life.
Floating in the imaginary castles free from gravity
Far away from reality
She feels safe like still in the cocoon
But Alas, dreams don’t last.
