Two Poems from our Funerals Poetry Collection

THE FATHER I NEVER REALLY HAD

Author: Nicole Spencer

Poem:
THE FATHER I NEVER REALLY HAD

They told me you were sick, and they told me you were sad.
But the only thing I really understood is that you were my Dad.

One day you were gone, but I couldn’t let go.
Why you took your own life, I just had to know.

Didn’t you love us? Didn’t you care?
You were our father, you were supposed to always be there.

Me and my brothers, weren’t we enough?
To make you a man, to make you want to be tough?

God didn’t call you, but still you ran.
Looking for an escape, searching for his hand.

You left us behind, you took your own life.
Never considering your children and your wife.

Our lives went on they went on it's true,
Our lives went on, they went on without you.

You missed the good times. You missed the bad.
And today I find it hard to miss the father that I never really had.

DEATH

Author: Adam Smith

Poem: DEATH

kills sudden
leaving behind nothing but grief and sorrow
like a lock without a combination
when you find the three digits it's too late
feasting on all that live
but suffering from starvation
but death is neither friend nor foe
cleaning away filth
washing away guilt
yet takes who we hold so dear
and leaves nothing but everlasting tears
