In a pub
In a corner,
Two ladies stood alone
Deliberating rather seriously,
The eligibility of the eligible.
The size of his wallet ,they said,
Should somewhat accommodate
Weekend movies and lunches out……….
And once in a while vacations
To Paris , Niagara and Hawaii -
Far away places I had only
But read about.
And he must be learned ,
With degrees and Masters
- A doctrine an added advantage –
From Harvard , M.I.T , Princeton ………
The best in western education ,
So I came to learn.
The man must drive ;
They emphasized ;
But not those damned Toyota s
Which even servants drove!
But rather the flashy sports cars ;
You know, Lexus , Lotus, S.U.V.s ……
I smiled and juxtaposed
Their qualifications and mine :
Looked at the meager ten thousand
That barely got me from Nairobi,
My beloved degree from JKUAT –
In Engineering, mind you!
And my precious Beetle… , and sadly realized,
That maybe I wasn’t that
Eligible after all.
