THE LITTLE CELL PHONE

Author: Jan Marshall

Poem:
THE LITTLE CELL PHONE

  There was a little cell phone that we bought in Tennessee
When we were going trucking, so in contact we could be.
When I went north and you went west, ‘twas difficult to bear,
But I loved to hear your voice, my love, when you said, “Are you there?”

Oft it would “beep” when I was asleep, or sat behind the wheel
Of my big truck, so a chance I took, a moment for to steal.
But the signal faded in and out, and your voice I could not hear;
Then I’d rejoice when I heard you saying clearly, “Are you there?”

Sprint PCS, I must confess, has a limited Service Area,
So at times you’d call, from a mountain tall, but I still could barely hear ya.
Then the Roaming Bill, (we shudder still) was pretty hard to bear,
Especially since the time was spent saying, mostly, “Are you there?”

Now you’re at sea in a towboat (no more trucking for a while),
It seems our little cell phone can cover many miles.
You called me from Seattle, and Hawaii — that was where
We talked for several hours, hardly saying, “Are you there?”

And so that little cell phone that we bought in Tennessee
Has traveled many miles since then; kept you in touch with me.
I’m looking forward to the day when you will be back here;
And when you whisper soft and low, I won’t say, “Are you there?”

THE JUNKYARD ROOM

Author: Elizabeth Hernandez

Poem: THE JUNKYARD ROOM

I saw a place full of garbage with junk all around. Then I heard a terrible sound. It was an awful noise. Hey,I figured it out. I had stepped on some toys. I saw something furry, it was a teddybear. Then I saw a doll with hardly no hair! This place looked so familiar. I looked and looked, it was my room. Then my mom came in and gave me a broom!
