Two Poems from our Holidays Poetry Collection

EMPTY HOLIDAY

Author: Hillary Lambert

Poem:
EMPTY HOLIDAY

  Times of loving are gone
no children playing
no cheerful song
this empty holiday has just begun

I stand where I used to but it doesn't feel the same
my family is gone, there's nothing left to gain
I wanted to be alone
but my thoughts were in vain
another empty moment...

When it happened
silent tears of joy ran down my face
now everything seems out of place
another empty moment...

I used to have people who cared
but the word love to me
also meant scared
they said it
but to me it lacked meaning
seeming emotionless while tears were streaming
EMPTINESS...

I thought I would be lucky if they were all gone
now I realize
that I was so very wrong
on this empty holiday
no laughter...
no song...
this empty holiday has just begun

They Don’t Always Pick You Up

Author: Ruth Berkoff

Poem: They Don’t Always Pick You Up

i fold my arms
and hug them tight
i hunch my shoulders
crease my face
i walk on quickly
holding tightly
to myself
some cars fly past
they splash me
from puddles nearby
could it rain any more?
could i get any wetter?
i laugh at it all
and look wide around
wiping rain
from my eyebrows
my forehead
my nose
i’m walking so quickly
i’ve now got quite hot
i’m sweating
i loosen my collar
i unhunch my shoulders
while slowing my pace
the excitement
and passion
of the rain
is over
all that remains
is my cold
wet
feet.
