Two Poems from our Holidays Poetry Collection

NEW YEAR'S DAY

Author: Achin Agarwal

Poem:
NEW YEAR'S DAY

The day of new year it was for all,
The temperature was continuously on the fall.
After celebrating all through the new year's eve,
Finally, it was time for me to sleep.
It was two in the night; so ignoring my sister's call
I went right into bed with blankets and all.
As I lay there in my quiet bed
A voice from the street went right through my head.
There was some pain in it,
The reason - I could not predict.
In order to find out what it was
I went to the window and opened the glass.
A man was there, who was pretty old
And he sat on the road, shivering with cold.
His hands were crossed on his bare chest,
As he lay there on the dust.
In front of him was the tyre burning,
The cold - that was the way he was countering.
I felt a strong urge to be a helper;
What I could do was provide him shelter.
To execute it, as I was moving forwards,
Suddenly I remembered my parents' words.
"No matter what, don't let a stranger inside the house,"
This was what they said when going out.
With a conflict on between my heart and my mind
I wondered if I could be so unkind,
As to leave the man behind.
All the same I had to remind,
Myself of the orders I received
Due to which I was unable to proceed.
The tyre was burnt, the ashes remained,
As for the man, off he went
Into the darkness, as I kept gazing;
With a hint of guilt I felt myself losing.
A tear rolled down my eye,
But now I think, all could do was cry?
I failed! I failed! Yes, I did!
That this is the fact, I do admit!
Although the day of new year it was for all,
Now I know, it doesn't mean happiness for all.

MY MOTHER, MY LOVE

Author: Rowena Perry

Poem: MY MOTHER, MY LOVE

You loved me from my time of birth.
Your gift to me, life on this earth.
Your sweat and tears you poured in me.
Your sacrifices, so bitter but sweet.
All you gained and gave away.
All you endured, the pain you faced.
Yet strong you stay to raise me right.
Your hopes and dreams so dim but light.
That one day the child you hold
Will become a woman, black, beautiful and bold.
To walk the path, you set the pace.
So steady I walk, within this race.
All I am and all I know
I learned from you, your heart and your soul.
So let me take this chance to say
To you ,my mother, on your special day;
I love you like the air I breathe.
You’re my love, my life, my everything.
