Two Poems from our Holidays Poetry Collection

THE GLORY OF CHRISTMASTIME

Author: Alexis Atherton

Poem:
THE GLORY OF CHRISTMASTIME

  I sit here,
rejoicing in the gentle silence
that is soon to end.
I turn on the radio
and soon the house is filled
with Heavenly music.

Songs that speak of holly and mistletoe
and of a jolly old man
dressed in a funny red suit
dance through my mind.
Occasionally, a man,
made all of snow,
and topped off
with a magical silk hat
comes to join them
in their merry dance.

I gaze over at the Christmas tree;
the lights,
twinkling happily at me, seem
at times to move along
with the drawling melody
of the music.

Saint Nick lounging
tauntingly across a green bough,
bunches of purple-red grapes
and red chili peppers which promise
a more exotic holiday
adorn this beauty
with the green dress.

Strings of golden tinsel weave themselves
through the boughs.
Bubbles dance wildly
through glass cylinders,
filled with liquids of orange, purple and red, and a wide array of glass treasures hang precariously from boughs
that threaten collapse.

But somehow,
with a little bit
of happy holiday magic,
this once plain beauty
stands proudly decked out
in its Christmastime best.

The music continues to
flow through my soul,
the lights dancing with the ebbs
as the creak of the front door
marks the end of a magical moment
that was savored like
the first taste of a rich chocolate mint,
melting and mingling delicately
in your mouth.

THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE

Author: Amanda Tornel

Poem: THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE

It was not so long ago
there was a War of Independance.
The army fought, brave and true,
to be free from the British army.
Although they were sick and tired,
they always remained loyal.
Their goal was freedom,
for them and their nation.
and now, 228 years after, their decendants
praise them on the Fourth of July
and thank them for making the
"Home of the free and the land of the brave"
