WINGS OF SUCCESS

Author: Megan Clemkey

Poem:
WINGS OF SUCCESS

I don’t have’ta be the girl that never falls apart,
I don’t have’ta worry about the breaking of my heart.
And if you try to nail my feet
To rough and splintered wood,
I’m never gonna stay down there,
Lying broken in the mud.
The acid rain you poor on me may scorch and burn my eyes,
But I don’t need my sight to see my goal up in the skies.
‘Cos I am gonna reach the mountain top,
And sound my victory call,
And I know I’ll suffer along the way,
But I ain’t never gonna fall.

So don’t trample on these angels’ wings,
‘Cos I still wanna fly.
Don’t bind my feet with ropes of pain,
I was not born to die.
Don’t think that you can stop me,
Steal my halo, rip my dress,
I’ll crawl through blood,
Climb graves of bones,
I’ll still reach success.

Don’t trample on my hopeful wings,
‘Cos I know I will fly.
Don’t bind my hands with ropes of fear,
I’ll still reach the sky.
I won’t let you stop me,
Break my halo, tear my flesh,
I’ll crawl through blood,
Climb graves of bones,
I’ll be my own success.

The stench of death might choke me,
Failure might trip my way
The pain might overwhelm me,
And doubt might fog the day.
But I’ll drag myself along the road
Toward the light so far ahead
When I want to stop from this heavy load,
I’ll carry on instead.

Don’t trample on these angels’ wings,
‘Cos I still wanna fly.
Don’t bind my feet with ropes of pain,
I was not born to die.
Don’t think that you can stop me,
Steal my halo, rip my dress,
I’ll crawl through blood,
Climb graves of bones,
I’ll still reach success.

Don’t trample on my hopeful wings,
‘Cos I know I will fly.
Don’t bind my hands with ropes of fear,
I’ll still reach the sky.
I won’t let you stop me,
Break my halo, tear my flesh,
I’ll crawl through blood,
Climb graves of bones,
I’ll be my own success.

I won’t stay tied to ignorance, corruption or deceit,
I won’t let my spilled blood or tears drag me down into defeat.
I will survive the icy frost,
The burning sun and stinging rain,
Your hunters’ traps and pits and snares,
I will not be slain.
Inside me is the strength I need to make it all the way,
And I can turn and look back at the breaking of the day.
‘Cos I am gonna touch the stars,
And soar through endless skies,
I won’t succumb to pain or fear,
I won’t be killed by lies.

So just try and trample on these angels’ wings,
‘Cos now I’m gonna fly,
Don’t bind my feet with ropes of pain,
I ain’t gonna die.
You couldn’t ever stop me,
Steal my halo, rip my dress,
I’ve crawled through blood,
Climbed graves of bones,
And I’ve reached success.

So just try and trample on my hopeful wings,
‘Cos today I’m gonna fly,
Don’t bind my hands with ropes of fear,
I have touched the sky.
I wouldn’t let you stop me,
Break my halo, tear my flesh,
I’ve crawled through blood,
Climbed graves of bones,
I am my own success.

SMALL TOWN BEAUTY QUEEN

Author: Ani Hughes

Poem: SMALL TOWN BEAUTY QUEEN

Spring time beauty,
Hair falls down over her face,
Puts on a smile,
But it only lasts for awhile
Peaches and cream skin,
For a moment she’s forgotten him,
Until the rain falls
And then she’s alone again

Blood red lips,
How she longs to kiss
The rain
Contemplates,
Catching the last train
Out of town,
Tonight
Away from this place,
Pack her bags, put her family to disgrace

Aims so high,
When she is alone she’ll cry,
Beside a mirror,
That torments her figure
Listen to her heart and it doesn’t get much better,
It tells her that she wants him, but her mind won’t let her
Doesn’t have a choice, career comes first
So try to explain, if this is joy, then why does it hurt?

Tired of being a small town beauty queen,
Wants to grace the covers of the city magazines
Believes she can amount to more than this,
Leave behind the one man, she’ll truly miss
Tired of being a small town splendour,
Wants to be held in his arms forever
But she believes she deserves better than this,
So she’ll leave behind the one she’ll one day truly miss

Sixty five now,
Her smile is gone
Her voice is broken,
Can’t sing her song,
Small town beauty queen,
Goes by unseen,
People pass,
They ask themselves
“She looks so familiar,
Where have I seen her before?”
Then someone else replies;
“Small town beauty queen,
We don’t see her much any more”
I remember, my days of beauty,
Put a smile on my face out of sense of duty,
Now my family are gone,
I’m old and frail,
Left the love of my life,
Yet to no avail

I never made it to the cover of a city magazine,
Now I have to question, was that really my own dream?

Open the newspaper,
On her birthday, now eighty three
Sees the name of the boy,
Says; “he once loved me”
Reads the line,
“In Gods hands for all eternity”
Cries, smiles, and says
“Soon that will be me,
We’ll be together again”
Looks out the window,
Steps into the rain

Tired of being a small town beauty queen,
Wants to grace the covers of the city magazines
Believes she can amount to more than this,
Leave behind the one love, she’ll truly miss
Tired of being a small town splendour,
Wants to be held in his arms forever
But she believes she deserves better than this,
So she’ll leave behind the one she’ll truly miss
