One step at a time...

Author: Brittany Thomas

Poem: One step at a time...

Sometimes I hear her crying,
Late into the night,
In the morning,
A smile that brightens up my life.
Like footprints in the sand that never fade,
Memories of death and loss never go away.
With strength and love,
She copes to help me memorize deep into my heart,
The good times, the love, the laughter never to be forgot.
The smiles I know hides what is really going on,
A disguise for my benefit, to keep me emotionally strong.

I am what I am today only because of her,
She put off material advancement to be there when I needed to be heard.
Through the tough times, her devotion never wavered,
I only wish I can follow what she has endeavored.

She has only tried to be the best that she can be,
Without any dysfunctional alcoholism to raise her small family.
Her sobriety has taught me a lot,
I appreciate the Serenity Prayer more then I ever would have thought.

“To take one day at a time”,
Is her most common phrase,
Even though easier said then done,
She has proved it true every day.
Anyone who knows her understands it is her way to thrive,
My mom is truly a survivor,
A very successful one in my eyes.

The downs are coming more often financially,
But that never stops her loving me unconditionally.
As a blossoming teen,
Who wants to drive and have individuality,
I know I bring her economic stress,
Yet she never will admit that to me.

With the strength of a fighter,
A heart of a survivor,
I know her desire to be,
The best mom she can be,
Has beyond doubt come true,
It’s become reality.
