Divine Divinity

Author: Vanessa Mancini

Poem:
Divine Divinity

On the lonely train, they sat across from one another
Beside a priest, a drunk and a dreaming mother
He was a young man no less than twenty
She was still a girl but with knowledge of plenty
They pretend to read the advertisements glowing on the ceiling
But they can’t ignore the feeling of affinity between them
Not a glance is met from the people all around
All are lost in their past or future’s unleashed sound
They express neutral faces
And they dream of other places
The boy watches a shy woman singing in the shower
A naked light from a blooming flower
The girl blesses an old man’s sneeze
who nods, angry only to be awakened from his dream
But the boy and the girl they’re here they’re now
giving secret glances from brow to brow
The girl lets out a slight hiccup
from the secret joy she is licking up
A little boy’s ice cream a pool still melting
left on the floor and no one is helping.

She rubs her legs together under her skirt
she can’t resist her freshly shaven legs
soft skin
A touch of gin on her tasted tongue
the boys love to kiss her but she never really kisses them back.
She dreams of drawing astronomy on a pure man’s chest snuggled between
sheets of sheer cotton.
She seriously squanders upon silly questions like:
Do old people have sex?
Or maybe they lay down in crinkled covers,
naked skin between wrinkles and soft crevasses
She smells like cigarettes and pretty hairspray
She often will pray even though she questions who
God may be.

He thinks it’s real funny
to watch people’s inexpressive faces
and wonder what they look like during an orgasm.
He sometimes laughs to himself,
maybe he is crazy.
His calloused fingertips are red
because he eats pomegranates by the seed
as if each peice were communion
He likes how on the inside
there’s hundreds of separate pieces but in
truth it is all one whole fruit.
He likes to read children’s books
and he spends more time thinking about writing
than actually getting anything down.

So
Me
Do.

He understood the next stop he would have to go
Butterflies flapped their wings against the inside of their skin
Neither could hide their uncontrollable grin
He wondered if he should give her his number
She wanted to kiss his thumb but thought how dumb of her
But his stop has now arrived and it is too late
“This is my stop too.” she thought. “This must be fate.”
They both stepped off the train of non existent time
Their hearts beat up the stairs as their legs lightly climb
Only a breath of air is whispered through their unspoken lips
And back in it goes the space they gently sip
They floated outside and stood on the platform above
One reflection in their eyes, this was true love
They then parted their separate ways to different places
Both with glowing smiles spread upon their faces.

OUT OF REACH

Author: Maria Hastings

Poem: OUT OF REACH

sometimes she likes to think
what kind of person she would be
if life had been more kind
if she had known less sorrow and pain
her eyes wouldn't be so sad
her smile wouldn't be so forced
if only tragedy didn't strike
strike hard more than once
if only she could have known
what happiness felt like if only for a moment
its taste she always longed for
but it just wasn't meant to be
so close and yet so far
always just out of reach
