Two Poems from our Nature Poetry Collection

Dingy bird

Author: Emonena Onoriobe

Poem:
Dingy bird

I saw her in the stream,

She sang beautifully,

And she flew away,

Beyond my reach,

Oh! Dingy bird,

Where are you? I asked wearily,

Alas! I found her, she is dead.

There she lay peacefully,

In the dirty old dust of time,

Her feather flipped and flapped

In phallic abandonment,

And her voice echoed everywhere,

The forest is still and calm as if in mourning,

Knowing that she will never again,
hear the Dingy bird sing.

SONG OF O-SO-E-Z

Author: Susan Berini

Poem: SONG OF O-SO-E-Z

I've listened to a chorus of frogs singing at night
I've seen the quiet beauty of a sunset at twilight
I've swam in the waters warm and crystal clear
I've sat late by the fire till there was nothing to hear

I've seen the mysterious glow of a firefly so bright
I've seen the wondrous beauty of a hawks’ most graceful flight
I've listened to the haunting cry of a wolves’s most lonesome call
somewhere in this forest I think I've seen it all

I've seen the lumbering beaver slap its tail at me
I've seen the magnificent night owl swhoosh down from its tree
I've held a little garter snake so fearless and so bold
I've made peaceful friends with those who can't be bought or sold

If you've never been here there's a beauty you can't see
of how much mother nature can give to you and me
it’s a life that’s free of worry, trouble, strife,
going to the cabin is an O-SO-E-Z life.
