Of culture & religion

Author: Ben Otieno

Poem:
Of culture & religion

One man’s religion could become another’s quarrel
But of culture, to the other it is more often a marvel
So why slayeth thyselves oh ye men of inflated godliness
Praying for peace, while inside you house bitterness
There is no peace left, not even for the dead in tombs
Let alone for the innocent, still growing in wombs
Yes! The truism of a supreme one reigns to eternity
But why embrace the extremes of religion, which is insanity?
Just retrace your footsteps along the paths into your past
For there all peace, oneness, and glamour are cast
Carry the virtues of your traditions into this fertile future
And share the beauty that diverse cultures brings along
For there dwells the most cosmic love for us to nurture
We live in religion, but in culture we rightly belong

LORD I STAND

Author: Brian Kamara

Poem: LORD I STAND

As I stand,
At thy behest,
Dear Lord I pray,
You see through my inequities,
Transgressions and sins –
That cursed and left me a mottled offspring.

As the time comes
For my judgement pronounce,
Dear Lord I pray
You grant me mercy
In abundance – and forget
The trail which I leave
On my way home.

As my eyelids close,
To the beauty of the setting sun,
Dear Lord I pray
That no more will I be blind
But forever more
See through the haze of eternity.

As I come home,
On the eve of that glorious day,
Dear Lord I pray
That with open arms I’m received
To once again feel
The precious warmth that is love,
Dear Lord.
