CAMPING OUT IN THE BACK YARD

Author: Melanie Pering

Poem:
CAMPING OUT IN THE BACK YARD

It was a question of courage
(our flashlights blazing under the blanket
in the scary, pure black night of the
tree house).
My sister and I took turns reading
out loud from a Stephen King novel,
accentuating, enunciating, expanding
the particularly frightening parts…
all the while, every sound and shadow,
a confirmation of creatures inching
toward us.
Acorns dropped to the ground and branches
creaked in the wind,
(ravenous wolves, stampeding rhinos,
angry bears)
and we kept them at bay with our screaming
giggles.

Last Chance

Author: Cathy Money

Poem: Last Chance

I never knew you
considering all we'd been through.
You were just another small face
in an unforgettable place.

Someone I knew by name
to play some silly game.
No hugs or kisses to be shared
because we were just too scared
to say that we really did care.

Instead we pretended to hate
to ensure our childish fate.
Now we're all we have left today
and love should be the only way.
