POOL

Author: Lee Emmett

Poem:
POOL

  fifty years later
pool dignitaries
RSL and Shire
and local committees

celebrate achievement
community amenity
whole area uses it
a wonderful facility

kids once swam
from creek’s clay banks
with red fin and leech
in Yarriambiack

breast stroke and back stroke
mums and dads show
crawl and dog paddle
yabby biting toe

Warracknabeal resurgent
after World War 11
families growing up there
wanted better pool new

everyone fund-raised
in innovative ways
raffles and dances
and comic cabarets

Anzac memorial park
considered best place
to locate Olympic pool
brightened every face

trades people helped
and volunteers too
service clubs involved
banded as building crew

women’s auxiliaries
also played their part
local groups and schools
gave project kick-start

film footage of pool opening
shows whole town turn out
vital town asset
enjoyed by all about

STALEMATE

Author: Lee Emmett

Poem: STALEMATE

worse now: unknown
was manageable
now have to start again

discover moving feast
don’t even know
where the table is

everything’s changed
except desire -
basic feeling
behind shadow
creating absence

silence is more
than unendurable
because no finality
or closure - as it’s
called nowadays

just unwillingness
to take steps
towards mutually
acceptable position

so left again
worse: knowing presence
fearing approach
