Two Poems from our Summer Poetry Collection

Sleepless nights

Author: Shannon Bernath

Poem:
Sleepless nights

Why does my mind want to escape this trap?
I got caught in the middle yesterday
as we began to express the reasons for the
way we ended up here. Driving along staring
at each other through the overhead mirror.
Built up on a breezy afternoon when we
shared your chair, drinking a beer.
Only to wake up to you singing in the
humidity. This morning you are by far
the cutest, where the local competition
does not exist. You watched me sleep
peacefully wrapping my arms around you.
The confusion began and I fell gracefully
in love with you. I put my seat back
further into this tangle of lies, steaming
up your windows feeling juvenile.

ENDLESS SUMMER

Author: Katlin Dowling

Poem: ENDLESS SUMMER

The endless summer sun blazes hot
Casting a shimmering heat over everything in its path
The glowing sand beckons the seashell pink of your toenails
You wiggle your toes in the sweet warmth
Letting it slide softly between them
Taking you back to a time long ago

When the water glowed with an emerald blue
Endless color in motion
That reached its arms to the horizon
Full of waves that tumble playfully over each other
Entwining seaweed and foam together
Beckoning to the adventuresome nature in your young mind

A time when you watched the ocean with a fearsome awe
Standing at the edge of the sand, the waves reaching for your toes
While all around you sand castles rose, higher and higher
Finally you inched warily into the water
Nervous about what might lie beneath that rippling mirror
Your hair a white blonde from endless hours in the sun
Soon splashing prismatic waves of blue
Unafraid

Far beneath it all magnificent unknowns of the ocean floor
Lurking in your ‘little girl’ mind
Yet they were distant, never removing the feeling of safety
You feel an endless calm
As you slowly return to the present
All of the dangers in childhood thought evaporate
And you lie in the comfort of the sand and sun
While on the horizon whales spout towers of mist

Lying in peace for eternity
You are wrapped in the warmth of your memory
Until, at last, the sun wins its slow race across the sky
And warm colors whisk themselves across the horizon
Finally fading into the darkness of your mind
Leaving you with only a memory for tomorrow
A never ending day in this endless summer
