Two Poems from our Summer Poetry Collection

THE DAY I WAS ABLE TO SEE

Author: Gabrielle Crichlow

Poem:
THE DAY I WAS ABLE TO SEE

  The summer I was fifteen
I was celebrating my upcoming birthday
Waiting for the clock to strike twelve
Excited about being a year older
Waiting for what was to come
The following day.
Ding, ding, ding!!!
The clock struck twelve
My birthday came.
August had arrived.
I became sixteen.
I drifted to sleep on pink clouds
And woke up bathed in blue sunlight
Seven hours later
Getting ready for the coming day.
I was sixteen!!!! Yaa!!!!
I felt so blessed
I had to thank God
For letting me see that day,
The day I was able to see.

The Pure Untainted World

Author: Kimberly Johnston

Poem: The Pure Untainted World

You see the flowers in fullest bloom
The beautiful colors form a rainbow on the ground

You see the trees reaching, reaching
their branches to the sky
Their only goal is to go higher and higher

You see the eagles soar through the air
The sunlight gleaming of their jet-black wings
Flying further and further into the distance

You listen to the whisper of the wind
As if it's telling you a story
of the young and of the old

You hear the birds chirping as they fly past
soft and gentle is their lullaby
This song is like no other

You hear the rippling of a nearby brook
Its flow is steady
Its rhythm synchronized with the beating of your heart

You feel the grass beneath your feet
its fullness makes you feel alive

You feel the strength of the wind
Pushing, pushing on you to go
When all you want is to stay

You feel the sun's rays beating down on you
warm and comforting

You know the world around you
If only it could remain unchanged
