I was pulling onto our street,
When there was someone at the door to greet.
Little did I know why they were there,
They gave me the news I could not bear.
They said that you had been in an accident,
Right away I knew what they meant.
I started screaming your name,
But, Daddy, you never came.
We immediately let people know,
That God had chosen you to go.
Friends and family immediately started coming,
Wondering if they could do something.
Father Bob came and led us in a prayer,
It was like a party, but you weren’t there.
We had to make decisions for the funeral and wake,
These were the hardest choices to make.
For this was our last chance to show,
How much we loved you so.
We went to the accident scene the next day,
I knew it would be hard, but I went anyway.
We planted flowers and began to pray,
That God would take care of you in every way.
I just sat there and stared at your car,
This was the hardest moment in my life, so far.
This is where you took your last breath,
And without even knowing, came your death.
I placed a pink carnation on the driver’s seat,
This is the spot where all your hopes and dreams were beat.
Your left shoe fell off when you got hit,
This I took and will always cherish it.
At the wake over 1,500 people came to see you,
That showed you were loved in everything you’d do.
They all say you were the best dad,
I agree, you’re the best I could have had.
The funeral home was full of tears,
Remembering the times we’ve had over the years.
The next morning I had to say good bye forever,
But the memories I will always remember.
I knew that this was the last place,
That I would ever see your face.
I gave you a great big hug,
And tucked you in nice and snug.
Knowing that I would never see you again,
And things have changed from the way they’ve always been.
I told you I loved you,
Just to make sure you knew.
Dad, I wish I could have taken your place,
But I guess God chose you in this case.
Thanks so much for all you did,
You made me proud to be your kid.
You were the best dad for me,
And my daddy you will always be.
